Why Pingyao is worth the detour
Pingyao is one of the best-preserved walled county towns in China. Its roughly 6-kilometre city wall dates to the Ming dynasty, and inside it you find grey-brick courtyard houses, stone lions, old merchant banks and lantern-lit lanes. In the Qing era it was a financial hub, home to some of the first “draft banks” that moved silver across the country. UNESCO inscribed the old city in 1997.
It is not a hidden gem: weekends and national holidays are busy, and the main streets are lined with souvenir shops. But get there early or stay overnight and it becomes quiet and atmospheric. It pairs naturally with Xi’an and the Yungang Grottoes near Datong on a northern China loop.
How many days do you need?
| Stay | Best for | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Day trip from Taiyuan | Short on time | Doable (about 30 minutes each way by train), but you miss the evening and dawn atmosphere |
| 1 night / 2 days | Most visitors | Best balance: sights by day, walls and lanterns at night |
| 2 nights / 3 days | Temples and slow travel | Adds the outlying temples, such as Shuanglin and Zhenguo, outside the walls |
Getting to Pingyao
Which station? The one mistake to avoid
Pingyao has two railway stations. Pingyao Ancient City station (平遥古城站, also written Pingyao Gucheng) is the high-speed station on the Datong–Xi’an line. It is roughly 8 to 10 km from the old town. The older Pingyao station (平遥) handles slower conventional trains and is closer to the walls. Check the station name carefully when you buy a ticket. Most visitors on a fast train want Ancient City station.
By high-speed rail
| From | Approx. time | Second-class fare (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Taiyuan South | 31–56 min | ¥28.5–34.5 (US$4–5) |
| Xi’an North | about 2.5–3 h | ¥150–160 (US$21–22) |
| Beijing West | about 4 h | ¥213–312 depending on train (US$30–44) |
| Datong South | about 3 h | varies by train |
Fares and timetables change, so check on Trip.com or the 12306 app before you go. Our China train booking guide walks through the process for foreign passport holders.
From the station to the old town
- Taxi: about 15–20 minutes and roughly ¥15–20 to the South Gate.
- Bus 108: about ¥2, runs between the station and the old town gates (slower, about 25 minutes).
- Ride-hailing: Didi works in many smaller cities, though availability varies.
By air
The nearest airport is Taiyuan Wusu (TYN), about 90 km away. From the airport, take a taxi to Taiyuan South station and continue by train.
Tickets and costs
Entering the old town streets is free. To go inside the main sights you buy a through-ticket at the ticket office or at the gates. Recent sources quote about ¥150 (about ¥160 around Spring Festival), valid for three days, covering around 20 sights. Some listings count a few more. You may need your passport to buy and to enter. Rules can change, so confirm at the gate or on the official WeChat page.
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Through-ticket (sights inside walls) | ~¥150 (US$21) |
| Courtyard inn, budget to mid | ¥150–500 (US$21–70) per night |

A 2-day Pingyao itinerary
Day 1: walls, merchants and lanterns
- Morning: Arrive early, drop your bags at your inn, and walk the main axis: South Street (Nan Dajie) and the Ming-Qing street.
- Rishengchang Draft Bank: The place most associated with Shanxi merchant banking history, and the best place to understand why Pingyao mattered.
- City Wall: Walk a section late in the afternoon for rooftop views of the grid of courtyards.
- Evening: Wander the lantern-lit lanes after the day-trip crowds leave. If you enjoy large-scale performances, ask your inn about “Encore Pingyao”.
Day 2: courtyards and temples
- Dawn: The streets are at their emptiest. Great for photographs.
- Wang Family Compound and other courtyards: Some sources quote around ¥55 for certain compounds outside the through-ticket, so check.
- Optional temples: Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples sit outside the walls and are known for painted sculpture. Take a taxi and agree on the return.
- Afternoon: Return to the station for your train.
Where to stay
Stay inside the walls in a courtyard inn. That is where the atmosphere lives, and it makes early and late walks easy. A few practical tips:
- Book ahead on weekends and holidays.
- Many courtyards sit on narrow lanes that cars cannot enter. Message the inn for pick-up or luggage help.
- Check heating in winter and air-conditioning in summer. Old buildings can be cold or hot.
- Hotels must register foreign guests with the police. See our registration guide and how to book hotels as a foreigner.
When to go
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Spring (April–May) | Pleasant weather; good photography |
| Summer | Warm, some rain; busy school-holiday weeks |
| Autumn (September–October) | Often the best weather; avoid Golden Week (early October) |
| Winter | Cold and quiet; lanterns and grey roofs look beautiful, and Chinese New Year brings a festive crowd. See Chinese New Year 2027 travel |
Food to try
Shanxi is known for noodles and vinegar. Look for knife-cut noodles, local beef (Pingyao beef is a regional specialty), and dishes seasoned with Shanxi aged vinegar. Our China food guide covers ordering and menu tips.
Pros and cons
