Zhangye Danxia Geopark (张掖七彩丹霞) looks like a painter’s palette tilted on its side: red, orange, ochre and teal bands of sandstone folded into ridges, with wooden boardwalks and four main viewing platforms. It sits on the old Silk Road corridor in Gansu, and it is easy to add to a route that includes Dunhuang, Jiayuguan and Qinghai Lake. This guide covers tickets, transport, timing and a simple plan for foreign visitors.
What is Zhangye Danxia?
“Danxia” is a landform type formed from red sandstone and mineral-rich layers that were tilted by tectonic movement and carved by wind and rain. The Zhangye park is the best-known example in China, and part of it belongs to a UNESCO-listed Danxia group. Colors are strongest in low, angled light, and right after rain.
Two separate scenic areas are often confused:
- Qicai (Colorful) Danxia: the main park with the four viewing platforms. This is what most people mean.
- Binggou Danxia: a quieter, separate area with its own ticket, known for pale cliffs and rock formations seen in films.
Tickets and prices (2026)
Sources disagree slightly, because some sites quote old fees and online platforms bundle items. The most reliable pieces are the Zhangye city price notices: the adult gate ticket was raised from ¥54 to ¥70 on January 5, 2026, and the shuttle bus has been ¥38 since April 2023.
| Item | CNY | Approx. USD | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gate ticket (adult) | ¥70 | $10 | Official, from Jan 5, 2026 |
| In-park shuttle bus | ¥38 per ride | $5.3 | Mandatory; no walking between platforms |
| Online bundle (ticket + shuttle) | about ¥93–108 | $13–15 | Varies by season and platform |
| Deep-visit pass (restricted areas) | about ¥328–388 | $46–55 | Limited daily numbers; book ahead |
Many bundles are valid for 48 hours with a face-capture at entry, which allows a sunset visit one day and a sunrise visit the next. Check the terms of the version you buy. Concessions for students, seniors and children exist, but eligibility for foreign passports is not always clear, so ask at the window.
Where to buy
- The official WeChat mini-program “张掖七彩丹霞旅游景区”.
- Trip.com, Meituan or Klook-style resellers (often easier in English).
- The ticket window at the gate, with your passport. Queues can be long on holidays.
Set up payments first: see our China payment guide.
How to get there
By high-speed train to Zhangye West
Zhangye West station is on the Lanzhou–Xinjiang high-speed line. Approximate times: Lanzhou about 3 hours, Xining about 2 hours, Jiayuguan about 40 minutes. Fares run from roughly ¥100 to ¥230 (US$14–32). Our China train booking guide explains how to buy tickets with a passport.
By air
Zhangye Ganzhou Airport (YZY) has a limited set of routes, including Xi’an. Most travelers arrive by rail instead.
From the station to the park
The park’s north gate is about 36–40 km from Zhangye West, roughly 50 minutes by road. Options:
- Park shuttle service from the station in season: a few US dollars each way, with limited departures.
- Taxi or ride-hailing: around ¥80 (about US$11) one way. Apps like Didi can work; see our Didi guide for foreigners.
- Charter car: useful if you want sunset and a late return. Agree the return in advance, because taxis are scarce near the gate after dark.
Opening hours and best time of day
Hours change by season and holiday. Peak season typically opens around 5:30–7:00 AM and closes around 7:00 PM, with last entry about an hour earlier. Winter hours are shorter, roughly 7:30–8:00 AM to 5:00–5:30 PM. Confirm the dates in the mini-program.
- Sunset: the best light and the biggest crowds, especially at Platform 1 and Platform 4.
- Sunrise: fewer people, cooler air, softer colors. Worth it if you hold a 48-hour ticket.
- Midday: flat, washed-out colors. Avoid if you can.
- After rain: colors deepen, but boardwalks close if conditions are unsafe.
Best season
| Season | Weather | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Apr–May) | Cool, dry, windy at times | Good, fewer crowds |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | Hot days, cool evenings, busiest | Peak crowds, higher prices |
| Early autumn (Sep–Oct) | Clear air, comfortable | Best overall |
| Winter (Nov–Mar) | Very cold, snow possible | Dramatic but harsh; shorter hours |
Temperatures swing widely between day and evening, so bring a windbreaker even in warm months.
A simple 1-day plan (with one night in Zhangye)
- Morning: arrive at Zhangye West. Drop bags at your hotel in the city.
- Lunch: try local noodles or the Gansu lamb dishes in the old town.
- Early afternoon: head to the park (about 50 minutes). Buy or scan your ticket and take the shuttle to Platform 1.
- Golden hour: walk the boardwalks through Platforms 2, 3 and 4. Allow 3–4 hours in total.
- Sunset: pick one platform and stay put. Platform 4 is usually the best elevated view.
- Return: prebook the car or catch the last shuttle. Do not leave this to chance.
With a second day: visit the Giant Buddha Temple in town, or push on to Jiayuguan Fort or Dunhuang by train.
Where to stay
Most visitors sleep in Zhangye city, near the old town or the railway station area, because it has the most choice and restaurants. A few guesthouses sit near the park gate, which suits sunrise visits but offers fewer meals. Remember foreigners must be registered by the hotel: see how accommodation registration works, and our guide to apps you need in China.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |

| Low cost compared with big-city attractions | Extreme heat or cold at some times of year |

- Bring your passport; you need it for train tickets and entry checks.
- Wear grippy shoes and sun protection. Wind and dust are common.
- Mobile data helps for maps and tickets: see our China eSIM guide.
- Go to the toilet before queuing for the shuttle; lines can be long.
- Drone use is restricted in most scenic areas.
