Gulangyu (also spelled Kulangsu) is a small island of villas, narrow lanes, piano music and sea views just off the coast of Xiamen, in Fujian province. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is one of the easiest places in China to enjoy on foot: there are no cars or bicycles. The catch is the ferry. Tickets are real-name only and capped, so a little preparation makes the difference between a lovely day and a long queue.
Is Gulangyu worth it?
Yes, if you like walking, old architecture and relaxed seaside atmosphere. Think of it as a slow-paced counterpart to big-city sightseeing. Skip it if you dislike crowds on public holidays or if you only have a few hours in Xiamen, because the ferry logistics eat time.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Car-free, walkable, very photogenic | Very crowded on weekends and holidays |
| Colonial-era villas and museums | Real-name ferry booking can confuse first-timers |
| Easy day trip from Xiamen | Typhoon season can suspend sailings |
| Good seafood and snack streets | Food near the main lanes is pricey |
How to get to Gulangyu
You reach the island only by ferry from Xiamen. Foreign visitors normally use the Dongdu passenger terminal (东渡客运码头) and choose Sanqiutian as the arrival pier, which is closer to the sights and the shuttle stop. The other arrival pier, Neicuo’ao, is farther from the main attractions.
| Ticket | Price (round trip) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard ferry | ¥35 (about US$5) | Roughly every 20 minutes, seats not guaranteed |
| Boutique ferry | ¥80 (about US$11) | Air-conditioned cabin, roughly hourly |
The ticket includes the return, and the return stays valid for 20 days, so you do not pick a return sailing. Fares and sailing grids change, so always confirm in the booking app. Daytime services run roughly 07:10 to 17:30, with later sailings in summer.
How to book the ferry with a foreign passport
- Use official channels only. The operator’s WeChat account, its website, or the “Yujian Xiamen” (屿见厦门) mini-program in Alipay or WeChat. See our guide to paying in China for setting up Alipay with a foreign card.
- Know the booking window. Tickets go on sale up to 15 days ahead, including the travel day, with a new day released at 09:00 China time.
- Register with your passport. The operator’s published route for foreign visitors is a real-name verified Alipay account: add a passenger, choose “other document type” and enter your passport number exactly as printed.
- Pick the route. Dongdu departure, Sanqiutian arrival, date and time.
- Bring the same passport. The ticket, ID and traveller must match. Gates close about 10 minutes before departure.
If the app rejects your passport, some travellers report that staff at the terminal can help, but treat that as a fallback and allow extra time. Booking platforms such as Trip.com also list ferry tickets with English checkout; confirm the cancellation terms before buying. For a cheap data connection while you sort this out, see our China eSIM guide.
What it costs: a realistic one-day budget
| Item | CNY | USD (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Ferry, standard return | ¥35 | $5 |
| Combined sights ticket (Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden, museums) | about ¥90–100 | $13–14 |
| Electric shuttle (optional) | about ¥50 | $7 |
| Lunch and snacks | ¥60–120 | $8–17 |
| Total | about ¥235–305 | $33–43 |
Individual sights are quoted differently by different sources (for example Sunlight Rock around ¥50 and Shuzhuang Garden around ¥30), so check current prices at the ticket windows on the island. Museum tickets can be bought on arrival, so you do not need to decide in advance.
A one-day walking route
Morning: Sunlight Rock
Take an early ferry, ideally the first one you can book. From Sanqiutian, head uphill to Sunlight Rock, the island’s highest point, before the tour groups arrive. The view over the island’s red roofs and out to Xiamen is the classic Gulangyu panorama.
Late morning: Shuzhuang Garden and the Piano Museum
Shuzhuang Garden is a seaside garden with winding paths and views of the water. Gulangyu is nicknamed the “Piano Island”, and the piano and organ museums are worth a stop if you like music or old instruments.
Lunch: Lungtou Road and side lanes
The main snack streets are busy and priced for tourists. Walk a few lanes back and compare menus. Try peanut-soup, oyster omelette and seafood noodles, which are typical of the Xiamen region.
Afternoon: lanes, villas and the shoreline
Drift through the quieter streets, look at the villas and the churches, and walk the coastal path. Aim to be back at the pier by late afternoon: the return ferry queue builds quickly around closing time.
When to go
October to November and March to May are the most comfortable. Summer is hot, humid and crowded, and typhoon season (roughly July to September) can suspend ferries at short notice. National holidays, such as Golden Week in early October and the Spring Festival, need booking as early as the window allows. If you are planning winter travel, see our China winter travel guide.
Where to stay
Most visitors stay in Xiamen Island, near Zhongshan Road or the ferry area, which has far more choice and lower prices. Staying on Gulangyu is a memorable splurge: the island is far quieter after the last day-trippers leave. Remember that hotels must register foreign guests; read our accommodation registration guide before you book.
Getting to Xiamen
Xiamen has an international airport and is well connected by high-speed rail along the Fujian coast. See our China train booking guide. From Hong Kong, you can combine the trip with our Hong Kong to Shenzhen and Guangzhou guide, and download the essentials from our apps you need in China list.
Practical tips
- Carry your original passport all day. You need it for the ferry gate.
- Wear comfortable shoes: the lanes are hilly and uneven.
- Bring a power bank; you will use maps and QR codes a lot.
- Check the weather and typhoon alerts the night before.
- Keep some time buffer on the return, especially on weekends.
FAQ
Can I buy Gulangyu ferry tickets at the pier?
Generally no. Tickets are sold in real name through the official online channels, so book before you go.
Which pier should I choose?
Dongdu as departure and Sanqiutian as arrival is the simplest option for most visitors.
How many days do I need?
One full day covers the highlights. Two days (one night on the island) is more relaxed.
Is Gulangyu suitable for kids and older travellers?
Yes, with pacing. The island is car-free, but hills and steps are common; the electric shuttle helps.
Do I need cash?
Mobile payment is standard. Carry a little cash as a backup, but set up Alipay or WeChat Pay first.
