Chengdu Panda Base Guide: Tickets, Booking and Best Time to Visit (2026) — cover photo

Quick answer: The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the easiest place in China to see pandas. Adult tickets are CNY 55 (about USD 7.70), you must book a morning or afternoon slot online with the passport you will carry, and tickets can be reserved up to 14 days ahead. Go in the morning, ideally right at 7:30 from March to October, when the pandas are most active and the crowds are smallest. Allow 3 to 4 hours.

Chengdu is the city most travelers pick for pandas, and for good reason: the main base sits on the northern edge of the city, tickets are cheap, and the bamboo-filled grounds feel like a park rather than a zoo. But the logistics trip people up. Entry is by real-name reservation only, the timing of your visit matters a lot, and there are several other panda sites around Sichuan that may suit you better. This guide covers all of it, using the base’s own published rules as of October 2026.

Which panda base should you visit?

There is more than one place to see pandas near Chengdu. Here is how the main options compare.

Site Distance from Chengdu Ticket Best for
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding Inside the city, about 30 to 60 minutes CNY 55 (USD 7.70) Most travelers, short stays, families
Dujiangyan Panda Valley About 65 km, roughly 1.5 hours by car CNY 55 (USD 7.70) Semi-wild setting, red pandas, cooler air
Bifengxia (Ya’an) About 2 hours by road Varies by package; check the official channel Larger, more natural enclosures; a full day out
Wolong Several hours by road Check current rules Mountain scenery and a more remote feel

Note that the Dujiangyan Panda Base (a separate site from Panda Valley) was reported closed for renovation from April 2026 with no confirmed reopening date. Check before you plan around it. Also note the main base’s ticket does not cover Panda Valley, as the base’s own ticket page states.

For a first visit with limited time, the main base in the city is the sensible pick. If you have an extra day and want fewer crowds, consider Panda Valley or Bifengxia.

Tickets, prices and who gets in free

All figures below come from the base’s official ticketing page.

Ticket type Price Who qualifies
Adult CNY 55 (USD 7.70) Ages 18 to 59
Student CNY 27 (USD 3.80) Enrolled students up to undergraduate level, with valid student ID
Seniors Free Age 60 and over, original ID, no reservation needed
Young children Free Age 6 and under, or under 1.3 m, no reservation needed
Annual pass CNY 168 (USD 23.50) Ages 7 to 59, one entry per day
Sightseeing bus (inside the base) CNY 30 (USD 4.20) Optional; children under 6 or 1.3 m ride free

Dollar figures use roughly CNY 7.1 to the dollar and are rounded.

The base caps visitors at 85,000 a day, so the grounds can still feel crowded on a busy holiday even though tickets rarely sell out on normal days. Reservations can be made up to 14 days ahead, and sales stop when the daily quota is gone.

How to book as a foreigner

Step 1: Choose your channel

The base lists these official reservation channels: its WeChat official account and mini program, plus authorized apps including Meituan, Trip.com, Douyin and Tongcheng Travel. For most visitors from abroad, Trip.com is the simplest route because the interface is in English and it accepts international cards. Third-party platforms may add a small service fee, so compare the price against CNY 55.

Step 2: Pick a date and a slot

Choose either a morning slot or an afternoon slot. Morning entry runs 7:30 to 12:00 and afternoon entry 12:00 to 17:00 from March to October. From November to February, morning entry is 8:00 to 12:00 and afternoon is 12:00 to 16:30.

Step 3: Enter your passport details

The ticket is tied to one person and one ID. Enter your name and passport number exactly as printed. At the gate you scan the same original passport. The base’s rules say each ticket is valid for one person only, and entry is refused if the ID does not match.

Step 4: Save your confirmation

Screenshot the booking and keep your passport in your hand, not in a bag. If you lose signal, an offline screenshot helps. See our eSIM guide for staying connected.

A note on refunds

Tickets are valid only on the booked date. Under the current rules, unused tickets can be refunded through the original channel within 30 days from 5:00 PM on the visit day. Used tickets cannot be refunded.

The base also warns against buying from unofficial sellers and against paid “fast-track entry” offers. Do not pay for those.

The best time to go

Time of day

Pandas are generally most active around feeding time in the morning, then they tend to nap through the warmer part of the day. That is why the morning slot is the one most guides recommend. Arriving at the 7:30 opening gives you a head start on the tour groups. The afternoon slot is workable but expect sleepy pandas and larger crowds.

Time of year

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Summer in Chengdu is hot and humid, so go as early as possible. Winter is cooler, and the base opens 30 minutes later (8:00).

Holidays

Avoid China’s public holidays if you can, especially the first week of October (Golden Week). The crowds are heavy and notices can add temporary crowd controls. Check the official WeChat account before a holiday visit.

How to get there

The base is at 1375 Panda Avenue in Chenghua District, north of central Chengdu.

Option Cost Notes
DiDi or taxi Roughly CNY 30 to 60 (USD 4 to 8) depending on where you start Easiest door to door; set the destination in Chinese
Metro plus a short ride A few CNY Take Line 3 toward the Panda Avenue area, then use a short taxi or bus; confirm the exit in your map app
Hotel or agency transfer Varies Useful if you do not want to handle apps

Prices are estimates and change with traffic and time of day. Our DiDi guide walks through ordering a ride in English, and our payment guide explains how to link a foreign card so the fare goes through. Our essential apps list covers the maps and translation tools worth installing before you land.

What to expect inside

The base holds hundreds of pandas across a large landscaped area, including adults, sub-adults and cubs in nursery areas. Enclosures are spread out, so you will walk a lot. Many visitors pick up the optional sightseeing bus (CNY 30) to cover the long distances, especially in hot weather or with children.

  • Cub and nursery areas: the most popular stops, and where queues form first. Head there early.
  • Adult enclosures: usually quieter, with bamboo and shaded paths.
  • Red pandas: also on site and often more active than the giant pandas.
  • Museum and exhibits: useful background on conservation and breeding if you want context.

The base has also been trialing a rotational rest system for its pandas, meaning not every panda is on show every day. You may not see the specific animal you have read about, and that is normal.

Etiquette

  • Do not feed or try to touch any animal. Red pandas in particular can bite.
  • Keep voices down near enclosures and avoid using flash.
  • Do not buy “special encounter” or hold-a-panda offers from touts; the base says to beware paid fast-track services.

A simple half-day plan

Time What to do
6:45 AM Leave your hotel by DiDi
7:30 AM Enter with your passport; go straight to the cub and nursery area
8:30 AM Walk or ride the bus to adult enclosures and the red pandas
10:00 AM Coffee break, museum or exhibits
11:00 AM Head out before the heat and the tour groups peak
Afternoon Return to the city for hotpot, or explore Wuhou Shrine and the old streets

Is a longer panda day trip worth it?

If the city base feels too busy, a day trip to Dujiangyan Panda Valley is the most practical alternative. It sits about 65 km from Chengdu, uses the same CNY 55 adult ticket, and has shaded forest paths with a cooler feel in summer. The site is smaller, so half a day is enough, and you can pair it with the Dujiangyan irrigation system nearby. Bifengxia suits travelers who want larger, more natural enclosures and are happy to spend most of a day on the road. Several third-party platforms sell Bifengxia tickets with or without transfers, and prices vary, so compare inclusions before you pay. Whichever you choose, confirm opening status on the official channel first, because closures and rest rotations do happen. Many visitors do the city base on one morning and keep the afternoon free, then save the longer excursion for a second day if time allows.

FAQ

Can I use my passport to enter the Chengdu panda base?

Yes. The official page lists a passport as valid ID. Scan the same original passport you used for the booking.

Do I need WeChat to book?

No. The base also sells through authorized apps such as Trip.com, Meituan, Douyin and Tongcheng, and Trip.com works well in English.

How long should I spend there?

Plan for 3 to 4 hours. Cub areas are the busiest, so see them first.

Can I buy a ticket at the gate?

The base says all visitors should book online. On-site windows exist only for special cases and subject to availability, so do not rely on them.

Are tickets sold out often?

Normal days rarely sell out immediately, but holidays and peak weekends can. Book early.

Does the ticket include Panda Valley in Dujiangyan?

No. The base’s tickets are valid only for the main base and do not grant access to Dujiangyan Panda Valley.

Is the base worth it with young children?

Yes. Children under 6 or under 1.3 m enter free, and the sightseeing bus helps with tired legs.

Can I hold a panda?

No. Be wary of anyone who offers it. Treat such offers as scams and stick with official ticket channels.
