Wuzhen Water Town, Zhejiang

Wuzhen is the Jiangnan water town at its most complete: more than a thousand years old, built along a web of canals in northern Zhejiang, its whitewashed houses and black-tiled roofs linked by arched stone bridges. The East Zone, Dongzha, is still a living town of workshops and lane houses, where you can watch indigo cloth being hand-dyed and catch a shadow-puppet show. The West Zone, Xizha, is the showpiece after dark, when lanterns light the canals and their reflections ripple under the bridges. Autumn is the sweetest season — mild air, the scent of osmanthus, and softer crowds than spring. The deeper experience is to stay the night in a waterside guesthouse: after about nine in the evening the day-trippers leave, and the lantern-lit lanes belong to those who stayed. A dusk rowing-boat ride, gliding under the bridges as the lights come on, is the moment Wuzhen is remembered by.

Tips: Enter in the mid-afternoon and plan to stay past sunset — the lantern-lit canals are the whole point. Tickets are sold per zone, with a combined ticket covering both. From Shanghai take a direct bus, or the high-speed train to Tongxiang and then the K282 bus. Try the local lamb noodles and Dingsheng cakes along the lanes, and visit the Mu Xin Art Museum on the Xizha waterfront.
