Yunnan · Lijiang
With more than 800 years of history, Lijiang Old Town is one of those rare places that still feels lived in rather than staged. The Naxi people built this maze of cobbled lanes and grey-tiled wooden houses around a network of canals fed by meltwater from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, which rises, snow-capped, beyond the rooftops. Look closely and the details tell the story: carved doors and eaves, Dongba pictographs painted on walls, waterwheels turning slowly beside stone bridges. At its heart, Sifang Street hums with tea houses and small shops, while Mufu Palace recalls the town’s powerful Mu rulers and Black Dragon Pool offers the classic mirror view of the mountain on a still morning. Spring and autumn bring the clearest skies and most comfortable walking weather, with flowers in spring and golden light in autumn. For a deeper experience, stay overnight in a courtyard guesthouse inside the old town and return to the lanes after the day visitors leave, when lanterns come on and Naxi ancient music drifts from a small concert hall.
Tips: Arrive early for Black Dragon Pool at sunrise, before the crowds, then wander the side lanes away from Sifang Street for quieter corners. Wear comfortable shoes for uneven stone, and take it slowly at 2,400 metres — drink water and rest on arrival. Pair the town with Baisha village nearby, where quieter courtyards and Dongba workshops survive, or a morning at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
