Hukou Waterfall, Shanxi

The Yellow River is called China's Mother River, and nowhere does that name feel more literal than at Hukou, where the great river is squeezed from a broad plain into a narrow stone gorge and hurls itself some 20 metres down in a thundering, ochre curtain. The falls sit on the Shanxi–Shaanxi border, and the roar can be heard long before you see them; on a sunny day the spray throws rainbows across the gorge. Autumn, especially September and October, is the finest window: the river runs full after the summer rains, the surrounding Loess Plateau turns gold, and the light is at its clearest for photographs. For a deeper experience, descend into Dragon Cave at the foot of the falls and look up through the mist, then walk the Ten-Mile Dragon Trough to hear the river's full voice in the canyon. Pair the visit with Pingyao's ancient streets or the revolutionary history of Yan'an, both within a few hours' drive.

The Yellow River is called China’s Mother River, and nowhere does that name feel more literal than at Hukou, where the great river is squeezed from a broad plain into a narrow stone gorge and hurls itself some 20 metres down in a thundering, ochre curtain. For a deeper experience, descend into Dragon Cave at the foot of the falls and look up through the mist, then walk the Ten-Mile Dragon Trough to hear the river’s full voice in the canyon. Pair the visit with Pingyao’s ancient streets or the revolutionary history of Yan’an, both within a few hours’ drive.

Tips: Arrive early and start on the Shanxi side, where the morning light is best, then cross to the Shaanxi side in the afternoon for a different angle. Wear waterproof shoes — the platforms near the base are drenched in spray. Allow two to three hours, and bring a waterproof cover for your camera. Tickets are sold per side, with a shuttle bus inside each scenic area.
