At Huangguoshu, the Baishui River does not so much fall as thunder over a karst cliff, throwing up a wall of spray you can feel in your chest before you see the whole drop. It is the centrepiece of Asia’s largest waterfall cluster: a main cascade nearly 78 metres high, flanked by 18 smaller falls scattered through green gorges. The classic view is from the pool below, where mist catches the light and rainbows drift across the rock. But the deeper experience is the Water-Curtain Cave, a natural passage that lets you walk behind the falling water and hear the river roar from inside the cliff. The wider scenic area adds the stone-and-water maze of Tianxingqiao and the broad, low curtain of Doupotang, so a single visit spans roaring power and quiet karst beauty. May to October brings the strongest flow; late October pairs still-generous water with cooler air and thinner crowds.
Tips: Arrive early and start at the main falls before the crowds build, then walk the Water-Curtain Cave and save Tianxingqiao for the afternoon. Wear non-slip shoes and bring a light rain jacket — the spray soaks the viewing platforms. Pair the falls with a night in Anshun to try local sour fish soup.
