Hongya Cave, Chongqing

Hongya Cave is not a cave at all — it is an 11-storey cliffside complex of traditional stilt houses stacked 75 metres above the Jialing River, right where it meets the Yangtze. Completed in 2006 in the local Ba-Yu style, with upturned eaves, wooden balconies and red lanterns, it glows golden after dark and is often compared to the bathhouse in Spirited Away. Inside, floor after floor holds folk-culture exhibits, craft shops and food stalls serving Chongqing noodles and skewers. Spring and autumn bring the mildest weather, but the real magic is at night, when the whole cliff face lights up and reflects on the river. For a deeper experience, enter at the top-floor entrance at dusk and work your way down level by level to the riverfront, then cross the Qiansimen Bridge for the classic full view.

Tips: Arrive around dusk so you catch both the sunset and the lights, which switch on around 7:30 p.m. Start at the 11th-floor entrance and descend floor by floor rather than queuing at the bottom. Weekdays are far calmer than weekends and holidays. Pair the visit with a stroll through nearby Jiefangbei and a Chongqing hotpot dinner afterwards.
