If you’re reading this in mid-October, your timing couldn’t be better. Right now, in a remote valley in northern Sichuan, one of the most spectacular color shows on earth is hitting its peak — and this year it’s easier to reach than ever.

Jiuzhaigou — “Nine Village Valley” — is a UNESCO World Heritage national park where mineral-rich turquoise lakes sit beneath forests that turn red, gold, and orange each autumn. The still water doubles everything: every blaze of color reflects back at you, so the whole valley looks like it’s been painted twice. Peak foliage usually lands between mid- and late October (roughly October 15–30), which means the best week or two of the year is happening now.

Why it looks like this

The lakes get their impossible colors from travertine — dissolved limestone that settles into milky-blue and emerald terraces. Against that blue-green base, autumn does the rest: birch and maple turn gold and crimson, conifers stay deep green, and the contrast is sharpest on clear, crisp autumn days. Daytime temperatures run about 10–18°C, nights drop toward freezing — dress in layers and you’ll be comfortable.

The lakes worth your limited time

The park is big; a full day covers the highlights if you move with a plan. The shuttle buses hop between valleys, so you can ride up and walk down.

  • Five Flower Lake (五花海): The icon. Shallow, impossibly clear, with submerged ancient trees visible through the water and the most layered autumn color of any single viewpoint. Go between 10am and noon when the sun hits the surface.
  • Shuzheng Lakes (树正群海): A chain of 19 terraced lakes that reads like a painter’s palette in late October, flowing down toward Nuorilang Waterfall. The viewing platform above gives the full panorama.
  • Nuorilang Waterfall (诺日朗瀑布): One of China’s widest highland waterfalls, framed by autumn forest — pair it with Shuzheng since they’re neighbors.
  • Mirror Lake (镜海): Visit early morning when the surface is glass. On a calm day the reflection is so exact it disorients you.
  • Long Lake (长海): The highest and largest lake (~3,100m), backed by snow-dusted peaks — the grand finale at the top of the valley.

Getting there got easy

This is the big change most foreign visitors don’t know about yet. The old journey was a 6–8 hour mountain bus ride from Chengdu. Since August 2024, a high-speed rail line runs from Chengdu East to Huanglongjiuzhai station in about 1 hour 40 minutes, with roughly 20 departures a day. From the station it’s about 40 minutes by shuttle to Huanglong and around 1.5 hours to the Jiuzhaigou park entrance.

The classic move: take an early train, stop at Huanglong’s travertine pools on the way (they’re also peaking in color now), then continue to Jiuzhaigou for the night and spend the whole next day in the park. Book train tickets as early as you can — autumn is peak season and the popular morning departures sell out.

Before you go

  • Tickets are capped daily and must be booked in advance with your passport details. Don’t count on buying at the gate in October.
  • Altitude is real but manageable: the entrance sits around 2,000m, rising to about 3,100m at Long Lake. Take it easy on day one, drink water, and skip the alcohol the night before.
  • Start early. The park opens at first light; the first hour has the calmest water for reflections and the thinnest crowds.
  • Stay inside or beside the park rather than in the county town — it buys you an extra hour of morning light.
